For millennia, humans have practiced architecture and design fundamentally as theater, a self-conscious performance translating the psyche into scenery. As a reflection of our inner world, we interact with physical environment to inform lifestyle, and adapt surroundings to suit ever-changing desires. For a space to speak to the psyche of its inhabitants is not a luxury, it is a human need.

Atelier & Co. is a design studio creating buildings, interiors, art, and objects. Here, an architect is an artist viscerally rendering imagination onto paper, and converting line into three-dimensional form. Hand-drawing and painting are the rigorous and intimate tools that communicate the yet intangible space, and allow consideration for each meticulous detail, committing them to memory. Digital techniques complement our artistry as we pull from an extensive understanding of design history and culture to create original works.

This fusion of technique and knowledge grants us our agility in serving a wide range of clients and design needs, either as an individual organization or through collaboration. Whether we act as conductor or first-chair artisan, we execute our role within the orchestra to produce a single masterpiece combining comfort with beauty, reaching the highest level of quality.

Working closely with dedicated clients, we push their boundaries and ignite their imagination. We revere the past in order to appreciate the present, and merge academia with intuition. The results are well-informed risks that challenge beliefs and celebrate the idiosyncrasies of the characters as they play out their story.

Atelier & Co. is a company of designers based in Williamsburg, Brooklyn led by Richard Cameron and Jason Grimes. Working together since 2004, the pair has forged a unique position in the industry to run a full gamut of services from conceptual    artistic direction and project consulting, to couture design       services, intensely based in an appreciation for architecture in     its purest sense.

The Principals

Richard couples a broad knowledge of architectural history and practice with an inexhaustible curiosity about art and its broader context. He is the co-founder of both the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art and The Beaux-Arts Atelier, an educational platform for practicing architecture as a fine art. In 2013 he received The Arthur Ross Board of Directors Honor Award from the ICA&A. Richard has a Bachelor of Architecture from The University of Toronto and a Master of Architecture from Princeton University. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Architecture Magazine, Architectural Digest, and on the Brian Lehrer show.

Paintbrush in hand, Jason approaches design as an exploration calling on his many years studying form through oil, watercolor, pencil, ink, and clay. With a Bachelor of Architecture from The University of Miami and years of experience in visual art, Jason provides Atelier & Co. a perfect blend of raw talent and design agility, and a practical, results-driven work ethic that gets the job done. His elegant illustrations and built work have appeared in publications including Architectural Digest, Period Homes, Lucky Magazine, and Women's Wear Daily, to name a few.

Atelier & Co. is also the proud recipient of several ICA&A awards celebrating dedication to classical tradition in design.

No two projects are alike. Working with Atelier & Co. means treating the creation of environment and object with utmost care. Each client requires distinct aspects of what we can provide and receives the appropriate dedication.

conceptUAL & ArtISTIC direction

Here, we hold a charrette. Working closely with our client, we absorb desires to envision a concept, mood, and style.

We are the initiators, the strategists, the conceptual directors supplying the spark that turn dreams into reality.

Engagement can include art direction; historical consultation; drawings, paintings, and renderings; and painted potential schematic plans.

Project & DESIGN consulting

Applying the right knowledge, possibilities can be endless. By going a bit further in depth, our project consultations provide industry clients with a rare expertise in classical traditions and aid in bridging authentic design with quality craftsmanship.

We have revitalized hotel facades with a radiance and originality that was missing; educated a modern architecture firm on English Gothic for a major college campus; and re-envisioned a dark city carriage house into a bright Florentine palazzo complete with a 3-story cortile.

couture design services

This is a lifelong relationship, translating lifestyle into environment.

From beginning to end we hold our couture projects with white gloves. First discerning your taste and style, we distill how our client wants to live through concept sketches and watercolor renderings, down to every custom detail.

Working with skilled architects, craftsmen, specialists, artists, and builders, we move through construction documents and project management, bringing your dreams to built reality.
